British American Tobacco (BAT) celebrates its fifth consecutive Financial Times Climate Leader Recognition and receives validation of science-based emission reduction targets.

British American Tobacco (BAT) has earned its fifth consecutive spot on the Financial Times Europe’s Climate Leaders list, ranking in the top 5% of companies for the greatest reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity (2018–2023 baseline). This comes alongside validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for BAT’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050 and approval of near- and long-term science-based reduction targets. BAT also secured a rare “Triple-A” rating from CDP across Climate Change, Water Security, and Forests disclosures, placing it among the top eight globally for environmental transparency and action.

These achievements underscore BAT’s refined 2024 sustainability strategy, which integrates emissions cuts with its transformation to a predominantly smokeless business by 2035—reducing environmental impact while shifting from traditional tobacco.

Key metrics include 2030 targets (vs. 2020): 50% cut in Scope 1/2 emissions; 30.3% reduction in Scope 3 Forest, Land & Agriculture emissions; and 42% drop in Scope 3 Industrial emissions. By 2050: 90% reductions across Scopes 1/2 and key Scope 3 categories.

Chief Sustainability Officer Donato Del Vecchio highlighted: “This recognition reflects our ambition... and signals that our commitment and actions on climate and nature are not only ambitious but effective and transparent.”
